The case of Suriname

Jack Menke,1998

Abstract

This book examines the impact of global and national economic restructuring on urban employment in
Suriname from the 1970s to the 1990s as well as the emergent poverty and survival strategies pursued.
The rich in depth data have not been limited to the first job but include the second and third jobs, which
results in a more complete overview of employment, household income and poverty. Informality is
examined as an integrated featured of the heterogeneous employment structure, which ranges from
civil servants to the selfemployed. In addition, the effect of informality on poverty is assessed
quantitatively and compared with the effect of remittances. This book contributes to the development
of theories on urban economies in developing countries. The study is also of importance for the
longitudinal methods applied to explain quantitative changes in employment during two decades.
