promotes, produces and disseminates
development oriented information. SWI
distinguishes itself through a national,
regional and international focus on
information in various areas of
development, culture, economy and
politics.
We have committed ourselves to
strengthening our position in the
Caribbean and establishing our products
and services in the region, for the
benefit of our clients and the wider
society.
This is achieved through:

Producing
information for development by designing databases,
documentation systems and conducting social
and economic research

Publishing
information and making it accessible through
electronic information technology as well
as through publications and public lectures.

30 JAAR SWI
Van krantenknipsels naar digitalisering van
informatie
De Stichting Wetenschappelijke Informatie (SWI)
werd op 30 juli 1977 bij notariele acte
opgericht in Paramaribo. Onder de
inititiatiefnemers waren Frank Martinus
Arion (de bekende Nederlands-Antilliaanse
romanschrijver) Trudy Guda, Frans Olviera,
Ramon Reeder (wijlen), Harold Jap A Joe en
Cynthia Rozenblad. De oprichters waren van
oordeel dat er zowel binnen Suriname als
internationaal een informatiekloof was, die
belemmerend werkte op de culturele, sociale,
economische en technologische ontwikkeling.
Van meet af aan was voor SWI de belangrijke
taak weggelegd bij te dragen om deze
informatiekloof te doorbreken door relevante
informatie over ontwikkeling zowel
internationaal als nationaal voort te
brengen. De afgelopen 30 jaren is deze
informatie afgestemd op de eigen
mogelijkheden, vervolgens verspreid, en
tenslotte gebruikt voor de ontwikkeling en
identiteitsvorming. SWI is uitgegroeid tot
een non-profit organisatie die informatie
over culturele, sociale, economische en
politieke onderwerpen produceert en deze
informatie toegankelijk en
gebruiksvriendelijk maakt voor het publiek.
In het huidig bestuur hebben zitting Jack
Menke (voorzitter), Jerry Egger (ondervoorzitter),
Wonnie Boedhoe (penningmeester) Martin
Sastroredjo (lid) en Lilian Tangali (lid).
